Why Does My Hip Pain Get Worse at Night? The Position Problem Behind the Ache

You lie down to rest and your hip starts screaming. It's not your mattress. It's the position your hip has been stuck in all day, and here's how to fix it.

You laid down to finally relax. Lights off. Body still. And now your hip is on fire.

Makes no sense, right? You weren't even moving. You'd think resting would make it better.

Here's the thing nobody tells you. The pain didn't start at night. It started at 9am when you sat down at your desk. It just waited until you got quiet to show up.

Your Hip Has Been Stuck All Day

Think about how you spend your day. Sitting. Driving. Standing with your weight dumped onto one leg. Your hip joint lives in one narrow slice of the range it's supposed to move through. Hour after hour.

That's not neutral. That's a hip that's been shortened and compressed on one side and stretched and weak on the other.

When you're moving, you don't notice it. Blood is flowing. Muscles are firing. The joint gets distracted by all the activity. But the second you stop and lie down, the muscles that were holding you crooked all day start to lock up. The joint stops getting fed. And the brain, now that it's not busy, finally sends you the bill.

Most people with this have a pelvis that's tilted forward and rotated. That's anterior pelvic tilt and it pulls on the front of your hip like a guitar string. Lie on your back and that string gets cranked tighter. That's the ache.

It's Not Your Mattress

Everyone blames the mattress. They go buy a $3,000 bed and wake up with the same hip pain two weeks later.

The mattress isn't the problem. Your position is.

When you sleep on your side with your top knee dropped forward onto the bed, your pelvis rotates and your top hip gets jammed. When you sleep on your back with your lower back arched off the mattress, the front of your hip stays shortened all night. When you sleep on your stomach, you crank your hip into even more tilt.

So you toss and turn trying to find the one position that doesn't hurt. There isn't one. Because the position of your joints when you're vertical is broken, and lying down just exposes it.

What matters is getting your hips level and your pelvis neutral before you ever hit the pillow. That's why the Sleep Posture Fix focuses on setup instead of mattresses. And if you want to go after the root cause of the tilt, the Hip Alignment Program is where I'd start.

Three Things To Do Before Bed

You don't need an hour. You need to undo the position your hip's been stuck in all day. Do these right before you lie down.

1. Supine Knee Pillow Squeeze

Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat. Put a pillow or rolled towel between your knees. Squeeze it gently and hold for 5 seconds. Release. Do 15 of these.

You'll feel the inside of your thighs wake up. That's the point. Those adductors help level your pelvis, and after a day of sitting they've gone quiet. Turning them back on before bed stops your pelvis from twisting while you sleep.

2. Standing Hip Flexor Release

Stand up. Step one foot way back into a lunge stance. Tuck your tailbone under like you're trying to point it at the floor. You'll feel a deep stretch in the front of the hip on your back leg. Hold for 30 seconds each side.

This is the big one. The front of your hip has been shortened since this morning. This lengthens it so it's not yanking on the joint while you lie flat.

3. Side-Lying Clam

Lie on your side, knees bent, feet stacked. Keep your feet together and lift the top knee up like a clamshell opening. Slow. 12 reps each side.

Your glutes are the muscles that keep your hip stable and level. When they're asleep, your hip collapses inward at night and the joint gets pinched. These wake them up. If your pain shoots into the butt or down the leg, that's often piriformis territory, and these help there too.

The Pain Is a Message, Not a Mystery

Your hip hurting at night isn't random and it isn't aging. It's your body telling you the position it got forced into all day finally caught up.

Fix the position, and the night pain goes with it. I've watched this happen for thousands of people who were told they needed a new hip. They didn't. They needed level hips.

Start with the Hip Alignment Program tonight and give your hip a reason to let you sleep.
