Neck Hump (Dowager's Hump)
The fatty deposit at the base of the neck isn't cosmetic, it's structural.
What is Neck Hump (Dowager's Hump)?
A neck hump, sometimes called a Dowager's hump or buffalo hump, is the rounded prominence at the base of the neck and top of the upper back. It develops when the thoracic spine flexes forward chronically, causing the C7/T1 vertebrae to protrude and soft tissue to accumulate at that point. It's not primarily a fat or hormonal issue, it's a postural deformity caused by years of structural imbalance.
Common Symptoms
- Visible hump or bump at the base of the neck
- Reduced neck mobility, difficulty looking up
- Chronic upper back and neck tension
- Headaches and referred pain into the shoulders
- Self-consciousness about appearance
- Worsening over time without intervention
The Real Root Cause
The neck hump forms because the thoracic spine is chronically flexed (kyphosis), pulling the upper back into a rounded position. The C7 vertebra protrudes as a result. Over time, the body lays down fibrous tissue and fat at the apex of this curve as a stress response. Fixing the hump requires fixing the underlying thoracic kyphosis and forward head posture that drives it.
How We Fix It
The Neck Hump Correction program combines thoracic extension work, posterior neck strengthening, and anterior chain release to reduce the structural driver of the hump. The fibrous tissue can reduce significantly once the mechanical pressure is removed, but this takes consistent, targeted work over 6–12 weeks.
Decompress the C7/T1 junction
Specific traction and mobility drills reduce the compressive load at the apex of the hump.
Restore thoracic extension
Opening the thoracic spine is the most important step, without it, the hump driver remains active.
Strengthen posterior neck
The deep extensors at the back of the neck need to be strong enough to hold the head in a neutral position.
Release anterior chain tension
Tight pecs and hip flexors pull everything forward. Releasing them removes the forward pull perpetuating the hump.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a neck hump be reversed without surgery?
Yes, if it's postural in origin (which most are). The structural component can reduce significantly with consistent corrective exercise. The fibrous tissue component reduces more slowly but does respond.
How long does it take to fix a neck hump?
Most people see visible change in 8–12 weeks. Complete resolution depends on how long it's been there and consistency of the program.
Is it the same as a Dowager's hump?
Dowager's hump historically referred to postmenopausal bone loss (osteoporosis) causing kyphosis. Today it's used interchangeably with any neck/upper-back hump, regardless of cause. The same corrective approach applies.
