Take your shoes off right now. Look down.
Go ahead. I'll wait.
See your big toe? Is it pointing straight ahead, or is it drifting over toward the second toe like it's trying to make friends? For most people I see, that big toe is angled 10, 15, sometimes 20 degrees inward. And everybody thinks that's normal because everybody's foot looks like that.
It's not normal. It's common. Big difference.
Healthy toes are straight. They fan out slightly. Each one gets its own little lane. Your big toe should line up with the inside edge of your foot, pointing straight forward. When you press down, all five toes should be able to spread apart and grip the ground.
Most feet can't do that anymore. And it's not because you were born with bad feet.
What Did This to Your Feet
Shoes. Specifically shoes that squeeze your toes into a point.
Look at almost any sneaker or dress shoe. The front narrows. Your foot is widest at the toes, but the shoe is narrowest there. So for years, decades, your toes get pushed together. The big toe gets shoved inward. The pinky gets crushed in from the other side. Everything piles toward the middle.
Your foot has 26 bones and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments in it. When you cram it into a pointy box for 12 hours a day, those muscles stop doing their job. The toes lose the ability to spread. And that big toe angle keeps creeping worse.
Here's the part people miss. Your feet are the foundation for everything above them. When your big toe collapses inward, your arch drops, your ankle rolls in, your knee tracks wrong, and your hips shift to compensate. I've seen knee pain that started at the toes. I've seen plantar fasciitis that was really just a foot that forgot how to work.
Crooked toes aren't a foot problem. They're a chain problem.
What Healthy Alignment Actually Looks Like
Stand up barefoot. Weight even across both feet.
A healthy foot does three things. The big toe points straight ahead, not diagonally toward the second toe. The toes spread apart with space between each one. And when you shift your weight, the whole foot can grip and adjust, like a hand grabbing the floor.
Most of you can't spread your toes at all right now. You try to lift your big toe and all five come up together like they're glued. That's the muscle shutting down. It's fixable. It just takes waking those muscles back up.
And no, a bunion doesn't mean you need surgery. A bunion is what happens after years of that big toe getting pushed inward. That bump is the joint pushing out because the toe pushed in. You can slow it down and take pressure off it by getting the toe tracking straight again.
Three Things to Start Doing Today
**Toe spreading.** Sit or stand. Try to spread all five toes apart like you're fanning out a deck of cards. If nothing happens, use your fingers to physically spread them, then try to hold that spread on your own. Do it for 30 seconds a few times a day. It feels awkward and useless at first. It's not. You're waking up muscles that have been asleep for years.
**Big toe presses.** Put your foot flat. Lift all your toes off the ground. Now press just the big toe down while keeping the other four up. Then flip it. Press the four down, keep the big toe up. This one is hard. Most people can't do it day one. That's exactly why you need it. It rebuilds the connection between your brain and that big toe joint.
**Ditch the pointy shoes.** Get shoes with a wide toe box. Ones that let your toes sit the way they naturally want to. This one change does more than any exercise because it stops the damage 12 hours a day. Toe spacers help too. Pop them in while you're watching TV.
Get your feet working and everything above them thanks you. Your ankles, your knees, the way you walk, all of it starts down there on the floor.
Your toes were built to be straight and strong. Start giving them a reason to be.
Stop cramming your feet into a box and start rebuilding them here.
